TF11.3.2 Janes Creek - achieving whole of system water quality improvement in the Mackay region
This project seeks to address all pollutants in an integrated whole of system approach delivering management practice adoption, systems repair and treatment solutions to achieve water quality improvement. Reef Catchments will work with all landholders within Janes Creek to build trust in the science underpinning practice change so as to increase adoption, engagement and implementation. To achieve this, a range of approaches will be undertaken including provision of extension and management practice adoption incentives, systems repair of natural or partly modified systems to maintain or reinstate values, and implementation of a treatment solution (high efficiency sediment basin) to demonstrate the effectiveness in removing pollutants.
The project delivery will include the establishment of a water quality monitoring sampler (nutrients, pesticides, sediments) in Janes Creek which will be used to create a baseline and measure improvement over the duration of the project. Water quality results will be provided back to the landholders to ensure landholders are engaged within the process and take ownership of the improvements. Additionally two landowners will be trained to collect event water samples on their respective properties. This provides an opportunity for farm scale data.
Collectively the landholders can address potential management solutions to achieve the desired water quality outcomes.
