RP161C Complete Nutrient Planning for Cane Farming
The Complete Nutrient Planning for Cane Farming project will provide practical assistance to cane farmers in the Burdekin to adjust their fertiliser application rates to industry standard (SIX EASY STEPS).
Current work: This project will utilise all the learnings from RP20 while it looks to extend farmer assistance to a much broader Burdekin grower population. It will offer specific on the ground assistance for the farmer to implement nutrient management planning specific to their own farm. The agronomic service provided by the project will also support improvement in other management aspects of the farming operation such as weed management and irrigation leading to improved production and profitability. These outcomes will maximise the retention of grower participants and help drive further grower engagement. APPENDIX F outlines project responsibilities and deliverables.
The project has already engaged over 90 cane farms in the Burdekin area and help adjust fertiliser rates in line with SIX EASY STEPS, as required for their crop.
With the project’s extension to years 3 and 4, it will engage additional 120 farms. This will contribute to Reef Plan objectives of achieving ‘At least 50% reduction of nitrogen in anthropogenic end-of-catchment dissolved inorganic nitrogen loads in priority areas.
