Description

The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) Entomology Collection was established in 1981 and continues to the present. The collection consists predominantly of material from the Northern Territory, especially the Top End with a smaller component from Central Australia, but also has a small representation from Indonesia, particularly East Timor. Some extralimital specimens are also held for research, comparison, quarantine and other purposes.

Currently, the MAGNT houses 171 holotypes and 1070 paratypes of insects. To date, approximately 10,000 specimens in the collection have been databased. Only the dragonflies, butterflies, some moths, fruit-flies and all type material have been registered to any extent.

The collection was established in 1981 and continues to the present.

Taxonomic range

All insect orders found in the NT are represented and the collection has been rough sorted to at least the family or genus level. Only the Odonata, Heteroptera, Trichoptera, Hymenoptera and certain Lepidoptera and Coleoptera are well sorted and identified to species level.
